question

Q.: What is Coaching?

A.: Coaching is a way for you to get in touch with your inner alignment and core values, and to determine how to have your life reflect those values.  As your coach, I will partner with you to inspire you to maximize your personal and professional potential.  Our partnership will enable you to enhance the quality of whatever aspect of your life you are looking to change or improve.

The essence of coaching is that I am supporting and believing in the skills, creativity and resources that you, as my client, already have, but perhaps are not aware of.  I will help you change your awareness to tap into all the wonderful parts of yourself to help you move towards the direction you want.

As your coach, I will reflect your statements back to you, and offer different ways to look at your situations.  I'll do this by asking you meaningful and sometimes challenging questions, but you will always be in control.  Coaching is all about you - determining what you want, and the best way for you to get to that place.

As the client, you get to do the thinking, have control of our topic, and develop your own insights.

Together, we'll form a team to help you succeed!

Q.: Do I Have to Live Near You to Work With You?

A.: No - most coaching sessions take place on the phone, so you can be anywhere in the world when you call me for coaching!

If you would like an in-person session, I'd be happy to set that up with you if you have an office space available in New York City.  Please contact me if you want to discuss in-person options.

Q.: What's the Difference Between a Coach and a Therapist?

A.: Great question!  The main difference is that therapy focuses on past issues in order to help you feel better about the present. Coaching focuses on your present state and your desired future.

For example, if you desire an improved relationship with your manager, or a co-worker, or you want to figure out some ideas for you and a spouse to get out of a mundane routine, you could talk to a coach about what's happening now, and look at your goals regarding ho to improve these situations. Iif you want to work through, say, ten years of difficulty with a spouse or loved one, which is causing you difficulty in a present situation, a therapist would be a better option for you.

When we have our initial meeting, we'll spend some time discussing what's on your mind.  If I feel that the topics you want to discuss are better suited for a therapist, I will let you know, and would be happy to find you referrals.

Q.: What's the Difference Between a Coach and a Consultant?

A.: A consultant gives you advice and recommendations, so there is a teacher / student type of relationship. In consulting, the consultant leads the discussion. In coaching, we are equals. The client sets the agenda and leads the discussion. A coach does not give you advice, but, rather, helps you tap into your own resources so you can find the answers you most need by using your innate wisdom. In coaching, you set the agenda,

Q.: What Should I expect in a Typical Session With You?

A.: You should expect my full attention.  I will be listening to what you say, and to the things you don't say - what may be implied in your tone of voice, or, if we're in person, your posture or body language.

I may integrate visualizations or bodywork into our sessions.  We might explore where in your body you feel whatever emotional reactions we discover together, and how this effects you.

I will be holding the vision that you tell me you want for yourself. In doing so, if you're not taking action toward that goal, I'll be pointing that out so we can decide if you're ready to move towards those goals, or whether we need to re-align your them.

Based on what is right for you, I'll suggest homework/actions for you that will help you achieve the results you tell me you want for yourself.  I may also challenge you to step outside your comfort zone, but you have the ultimate control in deciding what resonates with you.

Normally, we will not resolve an entire issue in one session - it may take several sessions, or months, to really get to the heart of the matter.  Our sessions together can focus on one main topic, or you may decide you want to discuss different issues, over the course of our work together.

Q.: What is the Coach's Role in Working Together?

A.: There are several things I will be doing as we work together:

Listen - my job, first and foremost, is to listen.  I will listen to your spoken words and your non-verbal communication.

Acknowledge - I will make sure I've understood your needs, and sometimes I may ask you to take a moment to pat yourself on the back for an accomplishment you've made.

Support - Whether you simply need to spend time with an emotion or issue, or need help moving forward in life, I will be here for you - to cheer you on, to acknowledge your efforts, or just to be with you in the moment.

Hold Your Ideal Vision - I will always want the best for you - for you to achieve your desired goals and dreams. If I notice something that is holding you back, I will let you know so we can explore that further.

Ask Questions - I will ask challenging questions to help us get to the heart of the matter you want to discuss, and to clarify the topics you bring to me.

Be Creative - I may ask you to step outside the box, and try exercises with you to enable you to create new possibilities for yourself. These could be written exercises, or involve movement or visualization.

Create Action and Accountability - I'll help you create an action plan where appropriate and work with you on supporting and executing it.

Honor Your Privacy - our sessions are strictly between us.  I will not share any of your private information or discussions with anyone.

Q.: What Kinds of Clients do You Work With?

A.: I work with Managers, Executives, and anyone looking for change in the workplace - whether that be a new job, or a new approach, or something inbetween. I expect my clients to look at the role they play in creating both their current situation, and their desired outcome. Together, we'll tap into your own brilliance to create the future you are seeking.

Q.: Is There Anyone You Don't Work With?

A.: Yes. I am not a good fit for anyone that uses excuses to hold themselves back from their own greatness, or who is stuck in needing to blame others for their current circumstances. The focus of our coaching will be on YOU, so if you need to talk about how everyone around you makes you miserable, we probably won't work well together. It's fine with me if you have done these things up to today, but the moment we start working together, I'll expect you to change your perception, and think about how we can bring out your best and co-create the situation that allows you to stay at your best. You also need to be ready to take action. If you're not ready to do the work that will lead to your desired goals, coaching is not for you at this time.

Q.: What's Expected of Me?

A.: There are some basic expectations of as a client so that we can work together successfully:

Commit - Show up for our sessions on time. Be in an environment where you can talk openly, and be fully focused on our call. This should be someplace that you won't be tempted to multitask/drive/use a computer, and you won't be interrupted by the phone or another person. Provide payment on time, before the start of each month of coaching.

Have a Topic - each time we meet, you should have a topic in mind for us to discuss.  We can work on the same topic each week, or change it, as you need.  Note: it usually takes several sessions before a given topic is "complete".

Be Creative - as much as possible, be open to exploring a topic fully, in different ways.  Even if it means experimenting with methods you've never tried before, such as exploring different viewpoints, or visualizations.

Be Open and Honest - Answer my questions honestly, without fear of judgment. For us to truly get to the heart of the matter, you need to be willing to open up. You should also expect that I will tell you if I notice something is holding you back, or whether you're in your own way, or repeating patterns, all because I want you to have your best life!

Provide Feedback - If you need something changed or are unhappy with any part of our coaching sessions, tell me immediately so I can make sure your needs are met.

Accept Responsibility - You need to be in a place where you accept that you are fully responsible for creating the change you want, and be fully committed to taking necessary steps towards reaching your goals.

Take Action with No Excuses - when it comes to taking action, and there will be many opportunities in our coaching sessions, you need to be ready to step up and do the work.

Q.: Will You Help Me Make Decisions on Important Issues?

A.: No. You will be making all your decisions, and accountable for all the actions we agree.  I will simply be supporting you in reaching the clarity you need to come to a decision.  As your coach, I will listen without judgment, and help you tap into resources you may not realize are all around you.  I will not give you advice, however, or tell you what I think you should or should not do.
